CVD is also an effective technique for creating lab-grown diamonds. Unlike HPHT, which requires extreme temperature and pressure, the CVD process is more energy-saving, as it requires less temperature of 800 °C.
A thin seed diamond is added inside a sealed chamber. After that, the chamber is exposed to a temperature of about 800 °C. Next, a carbon-rich gas mix (hydrogen and methane) is introduced to the chamber. Inside the chamber, an ionization process often takes place, breaking away every molecular bond in the carbon gasses. With the ionization process, free and pure carbon sticks and accumulate to the thin seed diamond, forming something that mimics the shape of a natural diamond.
HPHT vs CVD diamond: how do they differ?
Apart from the temperature and pressure difference between HPHT vs CVD, the biggest difference between them is their morphology – how the structure is formed. Unlike HPHT diamonds, which are grown in 14 directions, CVD products only grow in 1 direction.
