Mount Puncak Jaya is a mountain in the island of Borneo. It stands at 3,017 metres (9,834 feet) above sea level and is located in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. Puncak Jaya is also known as Gunung Murud or Mount Murud. The name “Puncak Jaya” was given to it because of its height and the fact that it’s located on the opposite side of Mount Kinabalu (which means “mountain of fire”).
It’s believed that the mountain was formed from volcanic ash following an eruption by Mount Sibuyan at some point in time. Mount Puncak Jaya is one of the most popular peaks in Borneo. It’s a stunning climb, with a breathtaking view at the top. You can do it as a day trip or overnight, and you’ll be sure to see hundreds of other climbers on the way up!
When to go: You should go up Mount Puncak Jaya in the dry season between May and September.
