Oyo State Football: The Chief Onigbinde U-17 Football Tournament has the potential to change the face of grassroots football in Nigeria. Named after a former CAF/FIFA instructor and two-time Super Eagles coach, the tourney is a youth development initiative. The Onigbinde Forum organizes it to instill patriotism in young football enthusiasts and help them realize their dreams.
Oyo Labour Unity Football Championship
The labor movement in Oyo State has launched the Oyo Labour Unity Football Championship. The competition, also known as the Oyo Labour Unity Cup, is a joint project of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Nigeria Union of Journalists, and NITO Sports. The organizers said the competition was open to all teams regardless of nationality, status, or gender. The event will also feature individual and organizational awards.
Organizers of the competition gathered over 440 soccer players from 10 local government areas and divided them into 20 teams. They chose ten teams to represent the local government areas in the state, and they will compete in a tournament featuring a goal-scoring competition. The top scorer will receive a special prize.
Saki United
Saki United of Oyo State football club defeated Crown FC on penalties and crowned the 2022 Oyo State FA Cup champions. The club had defeated Shooting Stars in the semifinal before losing to the reigning champions, Housing FC. The team will now represent Oyo State at the national level, playing in the Aiteo Cup.
Saki United scored two goals in the first half, with Soliu Awhal scoring the first. A few minutes later, Saka Saheed doubled the lead, and Saki United had a 2-0 lead at halftime. Although the opponents scored a penalty kick, Omole Segun restored the two-zero lead in the second half. With the win, Saki United wrote their name in the history of Oyo State football.
Crown Football Club
Kunle Oyeleye, a prominent figure in Oyo State, is the general manager of the Oyo State Crown Football Club, one of the many soccer clubs in Nigeria. Oyeleye, a professor, is also a pastor who was a chaplain to former governor Olusegun Obasanjo. Prof. founded the club. Yusuf Ameh Obaje, a pastor and college professor, coached the former king of football.
The club is based in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, and plays in the Nigeria National League. In the past, Crown FC played at the Ilaro stadium in nearby Ogun State but switched to the Soun Township Stadium during the 2012/2013 season. They also played at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
Housing Corporation
A local media house has called on the Housing Corporation to assist the Oyo State football team in their quest to win the state championship and earn promotion. The housing corporation is currently on the hunt for sponsors. They have a limited budget but have enough passion for pulling this team up. The chairman of the Housing Corporation, Barrister Bayo Lawal, assured the group that they would give all the required assistance. He also said he would ensure that Oyo State can play in the premier league quickly.
On Saturday, the Oyo State Housing Corporation will play a preseason match against Shooting Stars FC of Ibadan. They will hold this game at the newly renovated Lekan Salami Sports Complex. The competition will kick off at 4 pm. Barrister Bayo Lawal, the chairman of the Housing Corporation, congratulated the young recruits and coaches for their achievements and said they are determined to return to their old glory.
Oluyole Warriors
Oluyole Warriors, a football team from Oyo State, have been promoted to the national league after their 5-0 win over a team from Abia State. It is a result of the team’s tremendous support from the state government, especially Governor Makinde. The state government has remodeled the team’s home ground to improve the atmosphere for football games. In addition, Governor Makinde has been a significant motivator of the athletes and a great fan of the team.
The Shooting Stars Sports Club, or 3SC, has been struggling financially in Ibadan. The team once represented game southwest, now a shadow former self. The state government needs to invest funds into sports development in Oyo State, and as a result, the club has been suffering financially.
